Sir,
One of the most critical and frustrating aspects of dentistry is the restoration that does not fit the preparation. Production of exemplary crowns and fixed partial dentures depends upon the usage of impression material and its technique of usage that accurately reproduces prepared teeth and their relationship to the adjacent oral structure. The patient comes to the dentist with high expectations and good faith for the replacement of missing teeth. However efficient, the dentist may be a production of exemplary crowns and fixed partial dentures depends upon the usage of impression material and its technique of usage that accurately reproduces prepared teeth and their relationship to the adjacent oral structure. An esthetically good looking bridge may not fit in at the time of cementation despite the best possible efforts.
In recent years addition silicone impression material have been reported to be most accurate in dimensional stability and surface reproduction. A large percentage of its success is attributed to its excellent physical properties and handling characteristics. [1] The accuracy of this impression material largely depends upon the technique and the type of tray used. [2] Dimensional accuracy of impression materials is crucial for the production of working casts in fixed or removable prosthodontics. Some authors claim that impression materials have improved to such an extent that accuracy may be controlled more by technique than by the material itself. [3] Some suggest that impression technique does not affect the accuracy of the material. [4]
With so many controversies present it creates an undeceiving factor on the mindset of the dentist and adds to the dilemma. This letter is an attempt to grab the attention of researchers to this routinely ignored aspect of fixed prosthodontics and authors look forward for some new-fangled studies using newer materials to authenticate and establish certain concrete guidelines in this perspective.
